Microsoft realized this first a few years back, diversified their portfolio by porting to PC and the Nintendo Switch, starting a transition to being a game publisher first and console manufacturer second. If you make your money selling games, and lose money selling consoles, then selling games without needing to sell consoles will make you even more money. In this regard, full platform exclusives become counter-productive. note I'm fairly sure it's been this way for the past three or so console generations. Both make their profits on online subscriptions, game controllers and other peripherals, and sales of games they publish. Here's the thing though: Sony sells consoles at a loss compared to manufacturing costs.
